The Structure can be Designed in Two Phases - Functional and Structural Design

The structure can be divide into two categories based on service.

1. Functional Design
The Structure should be serve their purpose after construction and also aesthetically beautiful.
In this design phase, Function of structure consider for their design for example if we want to build School then we have to consider Good ventilation, lighting, Acoustics, unobstructed view, ceiling height, size of room etc.. Also proper water supplies, drainage and water harvesting, lift location are equally considered for design.
Base on fictional requirement type of structure will decide whether it will be RCC or Steel structure. And if RCC structure then it will be a wall bearing or framed structure. Yes, also there is other factor to decide type of structure.
2. Structural Design
Other functional design, Structural engineer need to design Structural arrangement based on soil condition, type of structure, loading arrangement etc. by learning structural behaviors in different loads and its combinations.
Structure must be Safe, Serviceable and durable.
In RCC Structure following element need to design:
1. Footing Design
2. Column Design
3. Beam Design
4. Slab Design
5. Staircase design
6. Overhead water tank design
7. Underground water tank design
In frame structure load transfer mechanism is load from slab to beam, beam to column, column to footing and footing to soil.
In Steel Structure following elements need to design
1. Footing
2. Pedestals
3. Anchor bolts
4. Bas Plate
5. Column
6. Beam
7. Connection Beam to Beam
8. Connection Column to Column
9. Splice Connections
